The African National Congress has learnt with sadness of the passing on of professor Neville Alexander who for the better years in his life was a staunch opponent of apartheid and what it stood for.
Professor Alexander who was an academic, writer and liberation activist was a courageous leader who was outspoken in his opposition to the apartheid administration. He contribution was felt in the field of education and the need introduce universal access to all South Africans.
Having served 10 years on Robben Island as a political prisoner, he emerged steadfast in his belief in the democratic dispensation . His commitment to transformation is evident in the role he has played as Director in the South African Committee for Higher Education as he believed in the power of education. He was a leader in his own right and distinguished himself as a principled leader who played a visible role in a democratic South Africa.
He made his mark in the collective history of our struggle. His role in the broader liberation movement will always be remembered. To his family and kin we would like to convey our heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in peace.
