Special ANC NEC Statement

27 August 2012

The African National Congress National Executive Committee (ANC-NEC) met on Monday, 27 August 2012 for a planned special NEC meeting to reflect on the reports on local government and its performance.

This follows the completion of the ANC`s internal monitoring report and the recent Auditor General`s report. Both reports had highlighted areas considered to be posing grave challenges in the composition and functioning of local government respectively.

The Special NEC meeting also discussed the Marikana tragedy after receiving a report from the NEC members who are deployed by government to assist those affected. The NEC expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

It further wished a speedy recovery to the mineworkers who were injured during the massacre. It also expressed its support for the Judicial Commission of Enquiry, and as well as the composition of the inter-Ministerial Committee appointed by President Jacob Zuma. The Special NEC further appealed to all South Africans that nobody must use this regrettable tragedy for political and opportunistic reasons.
