ANC statement on the passing of Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi

21 August 2012

The African National Congress has learned with sadness the passing of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi. The ANC extends its condolences to his family and the people of Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Zenawi has been at helm of both the Tigray People`s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian government for more than two decades and has made a tremendous contribution in the arena of governance and economic development within Ethopia, the region and the Continent broadly. He also emerged as a strong proponent of regional integration in pursuit of African Union objectives.

Prime Minister Zenawi was not only a leader but also an intellectual with passion for leadership development. He has made his mark in the AU and has stood out as one of the leaders whose view found resonance with broader thinking of a self-sufficient Africa.

In him Ethopia has lost a leader and a visionary. He has earned his place in the post colonial history of Africa. The people of Ethopia and Africa will forever be indebted to his family and kin. May his soul rest in peace!
